Mesa Bench for IFDA Asahikawa - 2017
The Mesa Bench was created for the 2017 IFDA (International Furniture Design Fair Asahikawa) Commemorative Exhibition in Asahikawa, Japan. Inspired by the flat-topped mesa landforms of the American Southwest, the bench uses a broad horizontal seat and gently rounded back to create a simple, grounded silhouette.
The cantilevered seat gives the piece a sense of lightness, while the exposed half-lap joinery shows how the structure is held together. Crafted from Japanese Oak and shaped with softened edges, Mesa balances clear construction logic with a warm, approachable character.
Designed for an exhibition celebrating woodworking and long-lasting furniture, the bench reflects a respect for traditional craft while exploring a quieter, more contemporary form.
