Flight Chair - 2001
The Flight Chair was conceived during my study abroad in Denmark, emerging from an immersive exploration of Scandinavian design across Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. Crafted from a single maple board measuring 200mm wide, 1200mm long, and 50mm thick, the chair’s design process was deeply informed by visits to renowned museums and factories, where I engaged directly with the region’s rich furniture-making traditions and architectural heritage.
Drawing inspiration from Henning Larsen’s Enghoej Church, the chair’s form reflects a dialogue between structural clarity and sculptural simplicity, echoing the church’s interplay of light and material. The design evolved through multiple prototypes, each iteration refining both function and expression, before arriving at its final, resolved form.
In 2002, the Flight Chair received international recognition, earning the Bronze Leaf at the IFDA International Furniture Design Competition in Asahikawa, Japan, a testament to its synthesis of Scandinavian principles, material honesty, and thoughtful craftsmanship.
